Bunning's remarks about the incident in Iraq come amid speculation by Democrats and others about his health following a series of comments and events in recent months.
Bunning, who turns 73 today, has asserted that he is in excellent mental and physical health, providing letters from two doctors as proof.
He said earlier this year that Mongiardo looked like one of Saddam Hussein's sons, a remark for which he apologized.
He said after his only debate with Mongiardo on Oct. 11 that the Democrat's backers bruised his wife at a political picnic.
He participated in the debate via satellite from Washington, where he said he was needed to cast votes in the Senate. His campaign admitted he had used a teleprompter to read his opening and closing statements
On Thursday, Bunning was asked at a news conference about the Army reservists in Iraq who refused to deliver fuel out of concerns that they were lightly armored and for other reasons. "I don't know anything about that," he replied.
"I don't watch the national news. And I don't read the paper. I haven't done that for the last six weeks. I watch Fox News to get my information," he said.
Bunning is a member of the Banking, Budget, Energy and Natural Resources, Finance, and Veterans Affairs committees.
